    Description

For sale here is a coronation coach novelty tape measure, commemorating the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902.
The coach is made of gilded brass and originally would have had windows of red celluloid; these are missing, as is often the case with this particular piece. The carriage is suspended above four moveable wheels. In the front are two footmen holding the Coat of Arms of Edward VII, and in the rear stands Neptune holding a trident which represents the British Empire's status as a naval power.
The tape measure is wound from the top center of the coach by rotating a “crossed sword and mace” which rotates to feed the tape out of the side door of the carriage. One side of the tape is marked in inches, the other in centimeters. It’s missing its little metal end piece; it had been replaced by an old and tiny paper clip. NOTE: I cut off the clip; it was rusted and damaging the end of the tape, which I also cut off; an added photo reflects this change.
The carriage measures 3” long from wheel edge to wheel edge, is 1-1/4”wide and 1-3/4” high. It may have one or two of its original parts missing. For instance, the Neptune figure moves a little too much—perhaps originally there was something holding it in place. The axle is a tiny bit bent, also. But overall, it is an absolute gem and very competitively-priced when compared to the other such coaches available on the market.
