    Description

Ornate Antique Floral Design Sheathed Sterling Silver Scissors
    English * Circa 1840
These wonderful sterling silver (tested) handled embroidery scissors and their sterling sheath were made
in England by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham.
English silversmiths didn't mark small items (and have to pay duty on them) until required to by law in the early 1880s. The scissors and sheath are decorated with all over repouseé embossing featuring lush flowers and leaves.
The steel blades are tight with needle sharp points and they cut very well.
The silver on both the scissors and sheath is in excellent condition with no dents, repairs or splits. The scissors measure 3 1/4" long (3 1/2" in the sheath). They would probably have been part of a boxed set of tools or one of the Lady's Companions of the era. A couple of sets with sheathed scissors in this style
    by Taylor are shown
on pp. 128-129 of Nerylla Taunton's book
    Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries.
A very similar pair is shown on p. 108 of Gay Ann Rogers' book
An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
